New Arrival Alert! 🚨 In Queer Africa 2: New S New Arrival Alert! 🚨

In Queer Africa 2: New Stories, the 26 stories by writers from Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Uganda and the USA present exciting and varied narratives on life. There are stories on desire, disruption and dreams; others on longing, lust and love. The stories are representative of the range of human emotions and experiences that abound in the lives of Africans and those of the diaspora, who identify variously along the long and fluid line of the sexuality, gender and sexual orientation spectrum in the African continent. Centred in these stories and in their attendant relationships is humanity. The writers showcase their artistry in storytelling in thought-provoking and delightful ways.

This anthology comes after the rousing international success of, Queer Africa: New and Collected Fiction (2013) which won the won the 26th Lambda Literary Award for the fiction anthology category in 2014, and was translated into Spanish in the same year. It is now used to teach literature and queer theory at prestigious universities in South Africa.

As always you can get your copy at www.InterKontinental.org or our shop at Sonntagstraße 26 near Ostkreuz.

Happy Publication Day, @sharondoduaotoo! Heute is Happy Publication Day, @sharondoduaotoo!

An alien artifact turns a young girl into Death's adopted daughter in Remote Control, a thrilling sci-fi tale of community and female empowerment from Nebula and Hugo Award-winner Nnedi Okorafor

“She’s the adopted daughter of the Angel of Death. Beware of her. Mind her. Death guards her like one of its own.”

The day Fatima forgot her name, Death paid a visit. From hereon in she would be known as Sankofa—a name that meant nothing to anyone but her, the only tie to her family and her past.

Her touch is death, and with a glance a town can fall. And she walks—alone, except for her fox companion—searching for the object that came from the sky and gave itself to her when the meteors fell and when she was yet unchanged; searching for answers.

But is there a greater purpose for Sankofa, now that Death is her constant companion?

NEW BOOK ALERT! 🚨 Sixteen-year-old Deka lives i NEW BOOK ALERT! 🚨 Sixteen-year-old Deka lives in fear and anticipation of the blood ceremony that will determine whether she will become a member of her village. Already different from everyone else because of her unnatural intuition, Deka prays for red blood so she can finally feel like she belongs.

But on the day of the ceremony, her blood runs gold, the color of impurity–and Deka knows she will face a consequence worse than death.

Then a mysterious woman comes to her with a choice: stay in the village and submit to her fate, or leave to fight for the emperor in an army of girls just like her. They are called alaki–near-immortals with rare gifts. And they are the only ones who can stop the empire’s greatest threat.

Knowing the dangers that lie ahead yet yearning for acceptance, Deka decides to leave the only life she’s ever known. But as she journeys to the capital to train for the biggest battle of her life, she will discover that the great walled city holds many surprises. Nothing and no one are quite what they seem to be–not even Deka herself.

On 14 November 2020, Flora Veit-Wild presented her book They Called You Dambudzo, recently published by Jacana Media, in conversation with Julius Heinicke (Professor of Cultural Politics at the University of Hildesheim). With her memoir, the emeritus professor for African Literatures at the Humboldt University Berlin pays tribute to the Zimbabwean writer Dambudzo Marechera, who died at an early age. The very personal and intimate relationship between the two occupies a central place in the book.

About the book

This book is a memoir with a 'double heartbeat'. At its centre is the author's relationship with the late Zimbabwean writer, Dambudzo Marechera, whose award-winning book The House of Hunger marked him as a powerful, disruptive, perhaps prophetic voice in African literature. Flora Veit-Wild is internationally recognised for her significant contribution to preserving Marechera's legacy. What is less known is that they had an intense, personal and sexual relationship. This memoir explores this: the couple's first encounter in 1983, amidst the euphoria of the newly independent Zimbabwe; the tumultuous months when the homeless writer moved in with his lover and her family; the bouts of creativity once he had his own flat followed by feelings of abandonment; the increasing despair about a love affair that could not stand up against reality.; and the illness of the writer and his death of HIV-related pneumonia in August 1987. What follows are the struggles Flora went through once Dambudzo had died. On the one hand, she became the custodian of his life and work, on the other she had to live with her own HIV infection and the ensuing threats to her health.
