This book is a memoir with a ‘double heartbeat’. At its centre is the author’s relationship with the late Zimbabwean writer, Dambudzo Marechera, whose award-winning book The House of Hunger marked him as a powerful, disruptive, perhaps prophetic voice in African literature. Flora Veit-Wild is internationally recognised for her significant contribution to preserving Marechera’s legacy. What is less known about Marechera and Veit-Wild, is that they had an intense, personal and sexual relationship. This memoir explores this: the couple’s first encounter in 1983, amidst the euphoria of the newly independent Zimbabwe; the tumultuous months when the homeless writer moved in with his lover and her family; the bouts of creativity once he had his own flat followed by feelings of abandonment; the increasing despair about a love affair that could not stand up against reality and the illness of the writer and his death of HIV related pneumonia in August 1987. What follows are the struggles Flora went through once Dambudzo had died. On the one hand she became the custodian of his life and work, on the other she had to live with her own HIV infection and the ensuing threats to her health.

Katharina Oguntoye beleuchtet die Lebenssituation von Afrikaner*innen und Afro-Deutschen in Deutschland von 1884 bis 1950. Bisher war der Blick auf Schwarze Menschen in Deutschland bestimmt von der Sicht der deutschen Mehrheitsgesellschaft. Gefragt wurde danach, wie Schwarze Menschen in dieser Gesellschaft wahrgenommen bzw. ausgegrenzt werden und dabei wurden ihre Geschichte und ihr Leben lediglich als exotisches Beiwerk oder marginale Einzelfälle dargestellt.

"Schwarze Wurzeln" stellt dem erstmals einen Überblick über die Situation der Afrikaner*innen und Afro-Deutschen für die gesamte Periode der neueren deutschen Geschichte bis nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg entgegen. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf den Lebenswirklichkeiten und der Perspektive Schwarzer Menschen in Deutschland.

AFROPÄERINNEN nähern sich dem Alltag und täglichen Kampf Schwarzer Menschen in Frankreich an: Laetitia Ajanohun und Eva Doumbia beenden mit ihren Stücken die vierteilige Serie zu afropäischer Dramatik in der Lettrétage.
Mit den beiden gesellschaftskritischen Texten der Dramatikerinnen Laetitia Ajanohun und Eva Doumbia geht die vierteilige Veranstaltungsreihe „Afropéennes – #Afropäerinnen“ zu Ende, in der sich Künstler*innen auf unterschiedliche Weise einer #afro-europäischen #Identität widmeten.
Zunächst präsentiert die Belgierin Ajanohun am 22. #Oktober mit „Love is in the hair“ ihr Stück zum #Alltagsrassismus in Frankreich, das sich wie eine Partitur gegen das Schweigen liest. In rhythmischen Dialogen tauschen sich Schauspieler*innen über erlebte #Stereotypisierungen im öffentlichen und privaten Raum aus Miriam Ibrahim wird die deutsche Übersetzung des Textes szenisch und musikalisch einrichten.
Das #Othering, das die Figuren in „#Love is in the hair“ erfahren, begleitet auch den Alltag des jungen Drissa, in Eva Doumbias gleichnamigen Theatertext, der am 19. November vorgestellt wird. Der Junge zieht mit elf Jahren mit seiner malischen Familie in eine Provinzsiedlung nach Frankreich, wo er außerhalb seines strengen Elternhauses wie seine Schwarzen und POC-Freunde täglich #Rassismus erlebt. Drissa beginnt, sich nach einem „normalen“ französischen Leben zu sehnen – eine Sehnsucht, die sich in seinem zunehmend obsessiven Traum von einem Hund manifestiert. Rhythmisiert wird das Stück von den Namen und Todesumständen Dutzender Schwarzer Jugendlicher in #Frankreich.
In den letzten Jahren hat sich in Frankreich eine neue Generation von Dramatiker*innen herausgebildet, deren Texte dank des Vereins Drama Panorama: Forum für Übersetzung und Theater e.V. erstmalig in Berlin präsentiert werden.

How much do you know about African Lusophone writing?

Not much, we bet. And there are reasons for that. In this interview, musician-turn-author Kalaf Epalanga speaks with Yovanka Paquete Perdigāo about this body of writing and perceptively reflects on the roadblocks that Black African Lusophone writers face.

Epalanga co-founded the record label A Enchufada, which promotes new music styles from Portugal, and also formed the MTV Europe Music Award-winning band Buraka Som Sistema. He was also a columnist for the prestigious Portuguese newspaper O Público and is the author of the books ESTÓRIAS DE AMOR PARA MENIONS DE COR and TAMBÉM OS BRANCOS SABEM DANÇAR. A translated excerpt of the latter was published in an issue of @bakwa_magazine. Epalanga was slated to be the curator of the 2020 African Book Festival @ikontinental in Berlin…before it got canceled because of the pandemic.

Epalanga doesn’t think it’s all doom and gloom for African Lusophone writing. As he identifies in the interview, there are measures that can be taken to ensure that the works of Black African Lusophone writers get out there in the world.

Afropean is an on-the-ground documentary of areas where Europeans of African descent are juggling their multiple allegiances and forging new identities. Here is an alternative map of the continent, taking the reader to places like Cova Da Moura, the Cape Verdean shantytown on the outskirts of Lisbon with its own underground economy, and Rinkeby, the area of Stockholm that is eighty per cent Muslim. Johny Pitts visits the former Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow, where West African students are still making the most of Cold War ties with the USSR, and Clichy Sous Bois in Paris, which gave birth to the 2005 riots, all the while presenting Afropeans as lead actors in their own story.

New Generation AFRICAN POETS Sita

The limited-edition box set is an annual project started in 2014 to ensure the publication of up to a dozen chapbooks by African poets through Akashic Books. The series seeks to identify the best poetry written by African poets working today, and it is especially interested in featuring poets who have not yet published their first full-length book of poetry.

The ten poets included in this box set are: Hiwot Adilow, Dalia Elhassan, Charity Hutete, Nour Kamel, Daisy Odey, Salawu Olajide, Musawenkosi Khanyile, Dina El Dessouky, Ama Asantewa Diaka, and 'Gbenga Adeoba.

Siphiwe Ndlovu is a Zimbabwean writer, scholar and filmmaker. Her debut novel, 'The Theory of Flight', was published by Penguin Random House (SA) in 2018. She has just finished writing her second novel 'The History of Man'. She is a recipient of a 2018 Morland Scholarship and is currently working on her third novel, 'The Murder of Emil Coetzee'. Tsitsi Dangarembga from Zimbabwe is an internationally known filmmaker, screenwriter and novelist and has been awarded numerous prizes. She has published her debut novel "Nervous Conditions" in 1988, at the age of 25. The novel has become an absolute classic and has been translated into various languages. It was listed on the May 2018 list of 100 stories that shaped the world by BBC. Her latest novel "This mournable Body" was just released last year.
