JJ Bola, born in Kinshasa, Congo, is an author and activist. At the age of six, he escaped with his family thanks to his grandfather’s diplomatic connections. He grew up in a London Council Estate. After earning a master’s degree in creative writing at Birkbeck University, he worked for several years as a social worker with young people with mental health issues. Bola speaks out globally against racism, about the migrant experience, and masculinity. He has published three books of poetry, Mask off, a non-fiction book on redefining masculinity as well as two novels No Place to Call Home (2018) and The Selfless Act of Breathing (2021).
